I'm a field marketing manager for MEPS Real-Time Incorporated, which brings to you Intelliguard® RFID solutions for pharmaceutical inventory. We're very excited to be a part of the RFIDea's booth, so thank you for having us.

The mission of MEPS Real-Time is to develop innovative, quality RFID-enabled products to eliminate patient safety issues on the hospital floor in healthcare. We do that by having products that make sure that clinicians have the right meds in the right doses when and where they need them.

What I'd first like to introduce you to is the Intelliguard® ecosystem. What you'll see in the center of this diagram is an RFID-enabled workstation where the processing or encoding of medications takes place. Each medication has an RFID tag affixed to it which has the medication name, dose, NDC, lot number, and expiration date on it.* That can happen in the central pharmacy. It can also happen in ambulatory surgery centers or outpatient clinics.

Once the RFID tag is encoded, it is then deployed out into different patient areas on the floor. That can include an operating room in the example of an anesthesia tray. It can also be out into central supply, for example a crash cart. From there we have the Intelliguard® client portal, which gives visibility to management to look and see where those medications are located at any given time, and also actionable data to decide what to do with those medications once they're deployed out onto the floor.

All of our products use the RFIDeas proximity badges, which is very important because it gives access to who's logging into our system, when, the date and time that it's done, and the action that is being performed.

The featured solution that I'm here to talk to you today about is the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System. For those of you who are familiar with the healthcare setting and the hospital, there are sometimes hundreds of different types of kits, trays, tackle boxes that are located in multiple places throughout the hospital. Each time one of those boxes is used it gets sent back to pharmacy for reprocessing. The current process is manual. It's very tedious and it can take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes to complete. The bottom line is it takes a lot of time. It is one of the least liked jobs in pharmacy.

What we did is we developed a product to help with the reprocessing. The Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System takes what could be a 15 to 30 minute reprocessing time and takes that down to anywhere between 3 to 5 minutes using RFID. What we did is conducted a quality study to see what the difference between manual processing and using our Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System actually was. We told technicians and pharmacists that we were placing errors in their trays, and we asked them to replenish their trays using the manual method. What we found was that one in every three to five trays that was deployed out into the floor had an error. That error could be an incorrect medication. It could be the right medication but a wrong dose. It could be medications that were missing. Bottom line is: not good.

We had them then complete the same process using the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System with the same errors. What we found was 100% of the time those trays left the pharmacy with zero errors in them. There's been a lot of research around human error and processing, especially for tedious tasks like the one that I'm mentioning here. What we found is even the best-intentioned employees who are trying not to make errors during reprocessing do so, because they're human. The great thing about our product is, using the Intelliguard® system in conjunction with a human doing the reprocessing, is that together the two are better than one.

I want to tell you a little bit about how the Kit and Tray Management System works. First, each of the medications is tagged with a small RFID tag. As I mentioned before, this tag is programmed with medication information including the name, the dose of the medication, NDC, lot number, and expiration date.* From there, when the tray is brought back to pharmacy for reprocessing, you hit scan and our system will automatically inventory everything that's located in that tray, telling the technician and the pharmacy what's missing, what's expired, what's recalled, and telling them exactly what needs to be restocked.

In the example that Charles was talking about with the television show Supermarket Sweep, at the end of that show everyone would wait in line to see how much money they got during their sweep throughout the supermarket. It was a barcoding process, so it took forever for each item to be added up. If they had RFID during Supermarket Sweep, all they would need to do is walk through a kiosk and everything would be inventoried instantaneously. I don't know about you, but not having to wait in line at the grocery store would be pretty awesome.

Aside from the obvious error elimination and time savings with our product, we also offer actionable intelligence for clinicians to utilize throughout a given period of time. What we see here is a six-month period that we are looking at for three different medication types. Each of these medications has a PAR level of six in them. You can see for the first example, phenytoin, or phenytoin, depending on who you ask, is used on a regular basis, and that PAR level of six is correct. For the example of magnesium sulfate, it looks like that medication is not used very often. Sometimes it's used once a day. Sometimes it's not used at all. We could recommend to clinicians to possibly lower that PAR level for magnesium sulfate. In the last example of epinephrine, it looks like that medication was used more than six times on any given period of time, and so we would recommend to clinicians to increase the PAR level of that medication in their trays.

To sum up, using the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System not only is better for the quality of patients and patient care in the health care system, it also eliminates errors, it helps with time savings, and it helps with employee satisfaction for doing a very tedious job multiple times during the day.
