What is RFID?

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is the wireless use of electromagnetic fields to read and capture information stored on a tag attached to an object. A tag can be read from up to several feet away and does not need to be within direct line-of-sight of the reader to be tracked.

Intelliguard® RFID Solutions utilize a global standard for encoding (or writing data) to the RFID tags, called EPC Gen2. It is a RFID passive technology, meaning there are no batteries/electrical connections to the product tags. We utilize UHF 900MHz bandwidth. EPC Gen2 is vendor agnostic but we do have RFID technology partners, such as Impinj and ThingMagic

Why RFID?

Intelliguard® RFID Solutions for critical pharmaceutical inventory are key to ensuring patient safety as well as controlling your hospital costs

Using RFID, error prone tasks such as manual counting and item-level scanning are eliminated. RFID is emerging in healthcare because it is low cost and creates multiple efficiencies. Using RFID allows you to reduce process steps, optimize labor resources, avoid errors and enhance data collection. Often, RFID in hospital pharmacies is driven by greater emphasis on patient safety. RFID automation in the hospital pharmacy supports automation of manual error prone tasks that put patients at risk. Hospital administrators are also finding that RFID saves thousands of dollars in optimizing labor, reducing supply waste and lowering carrying costs.

MEPS Real-Time, Inc. currently offers a suite of Intelliguard® RFID Solutions that employ radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to manage pharmaceutical inventory:

  • The Intelliguard® Kit & Tray Management System uses advanced RFID technology to automate medication kit and tray replenishment for faster processing and reduced errors. The System can inventory more than 150 items in seconds, providing details as to what’s missing, what’s expired and what’s soon-to-expire in medication kits, trays, tackle boxes and fanny packs/duffel bags.
  • The Intelliguard® Linked Visibility Inventory System™ uses patented and exclusive RFID technology to automatically collect actionable medication inventory data at the point-of-care, without requiring manual counting, paper recording or item-level scanning. Offering secure access, constant, real-time visibility and reliable use metrics crucial for charge capture validation.
  • The Intelliguard® Controlled Temperature Inventory Management System offers RFID- enabled Controlled Temperature Cabinets (CTCs) for high-value, critical-dose pharmaceuticals. By automatically updating cabinet inventory each time the door is opened and closed, pharmacy managers can quickly identify expired or recalled medication and detect shortages to avoid stock-outs.
  • The Intelliguard® Vendor Managed Inventory System offers RFID-enabled Controlled Temperature Cabinets to drug manufacturers / distributors to confidently maintain consignment inventory. The System continuously monitors critical-care product inventory to allow automatic replenishment and billing of products as they are used. The System also monitors product expiration dates to allow you to proactively pull and replace inventory well before its beyond-use date.

How do the Intelliguard® RFID Solutions work?

The Intelliguard® RFID Solutions process begins by placing a small RFID tag onto medication packages. The RFID tag consists of an antenna and a chip that contains a unique identifier.

Using the Intelliguard® Workstation (Scanner/Reader), product information/data such as manufacturer, medication name, NDC number, lot number and expiration date is associated with the unique identifier and placed into a relational database.

Once the product information/data is placed into the relational database, the data is utilized throughout the application. The pharmacy is outfitted with Intelliguard® RFID Solutions’ hardware (kit and tray management workstations and/or inventory management controlled temperature cabinets). The Intelliguard® System(s) is used to read the RFID tags of all product inventory. All inventory is counted simultaneously (this can take as little as 3-7 seconds).

In the Intelliguard® Kit and Tray Management System, any missing, expired or soon-to-expire medications are identified so replenishment can happen quickly and accurately. Alerts are programmed to support optimized workflow processes.

The Intelliguard® Controlled Temperature Inventory Management and Linked Visibility Inventory System™, update inventory each time the cabinet door or Station drawer is closed. Perpetual inventory counts are maintained, and forward notifications of soon-to-expire medications are enabled.

For all Intelliguard® RFID Solutions, data is made available via a robust reporting suite to enable confident, informed decision making.
